Project description
Problem
A validated calculation of the organic matter content in the soil (arable soil) based on (free) satellite data could provide more clarity and lower the threshold for taking (site-specific) measures to increase the organic matter content. In addition, this method could also be used to relatively easily visualise the OS development over the past years. Monitoring this development is a relevant bottleneck when drawing up new revenue models, for example with carbon credits.
If this new measuring method is successful, then one does not have to go into the field or wait for the right conditions to perform a measurement (as with the current soil scans). With this new technique it can be mapped which soils in the Netherlands form the largest potential storage for CO2.
Approach
Important in this project is the impact on education. Mbo students can learn together with hbo and university students at their own level about a common theme, which they all have to learn something about within their education.
Being part of a project team like this makes the subject much more alive for students. It goes from 'nice to know' to 'need to know' because it becomes real. So with a project like this you create a hybrid learning environment between companies mbo, hbo and wo in a relaxed, natural way. That is unique and inspiring.
Expected result
• Inspiration day
• MBO internship assignment for interns of the plant cultivation course
• HBO research assignment within the minor 'vital soil'.
• WO Bachelor project soil samples and analysis
• Knowledge sharing day results of field validation Sentinel images
